Undergraduate Programs Certificate in Theology (24 credits)The Faculty offers a Certificate in Theology program of 24 credits that provides a general but serious initiation to the most important issues addressed by contemporary theology. It allows students to study certain issues more deeply, according to their needs or desires. Program requirements a. Required courses (12 cr.) THO 1306 Exploring the Sacred b. Electives (12 cr.) Four courses to be selected from: N.B. All 3000 level courses have a prerequisite of at least 6 credits from: THO 1306, 1307, or 2189; in some cases, permission to take a course and its prerequisite concurrently may be granted. Furthermore, some 3000/4000 level courses have specific prerequisites. THO 2130 Foundations of Eastern Christian Theology N.B. Normally the Certificate in Theology can be completed within one academic year. However, this is not guaranteed by the Faculty. Students are advised to consult with the Faculty should they encounter scheduling difficulties. Three compulsory credits to be selected from: THO 2130 Foundations of Eastern Christian Theology b. At least 15 credits to be selected from: THO 2133 Selected Topics in the Hermeneutics and Exegesis of the Eastern Churches I c. Three credits in Scripture Three optional credits selected from either the above course list or otherwise approved by the Faculty. N.B. Normally the Certificate in Eastern Christian Studies can be completed within one academic year. However, this is not guaranteed by the Faculty. Students are advised to consult with the Faculty should they encounter scheduling difficulties. Honours Bachelor in Theology – civil (120 credits)The B.Th. (civil) is a 120-credit program consisting of 30 credits of foundational courses, 30 credits chosen from a list of other required courses, and 60 credits of other courses. A typical first year of university studies in a bachelor program in the Faculty of Theology would consist of: a. English (6 cr.) ENG 1100 Workshop in Essay Writing b. Philosophy (6 cr.) 1) PHI 1101 Reasoning and Critical Thinking c. Theology (6 cr.) 1) THO 2189 Introduction to Theology d. Electives (12 cr.) To be selected from courses offered at Saint Paul University (DCA, IPA, ISC, MIS, PHI, THO) and courses offered at the University of Ottawa (ANT, ART, CLA, ENG, ESL, FLS, FEM, FRA, GEG, HIS, PHI, POL, SOC, SRS, etc.). Honours Bachelor in Theology – ecclesiastical (108 credits)The B.Th. (ecclesiastical) (also known as the Sacrae Theologiae Baccalaureus, S.T.B.) is an ecclesiastical degree granted by Saint Paul University by virtue of its pontifical charter. The B.Th. (ecclesiastical) is a 90-credit program in theology to which is added 18 credits of philosophical formation. Admission requirements specific to the program The candidate must fulfill one of the following conditions:
Program requirements a. Philosophical Formation The philosophical formation required for the ecclesiastical B.Th. consists of a minimum of 18 university credits in philosophy or 6 courses at the Diploma of College Studies (DCS) level, including at least 6 credits tied to one or more of the following courses or their equivalent: PHI 1101 Reasoning and Critical Thinking If the student’s academic file shows that the minimum requirements have not been met at the time of admission, philosophy courses must be added to the 90-credit theology program. Normally, these courses must be taken at the beginning of the program. Some of the above courses are offered through the Faculty of Philosophy at Saint Paul University. Students who need to take more courses in philosophy can take courses at the University of Ottawa, at no additional cost to full-time students. b. 90 credits in theology according to the following requirements: 1) Foundational Courses (30 cr.): the requirements are identical to those of the “foundational courses” of the B.Th. (civil) 2) Other Required Courses (21 cr.): the requirements are identical to those of the “other required courses” of the B.Th. (civil) 3) Electives (39 cr.): electives are to be selected from theology (THO) courses (including courses in Eastern Christian Studies) or approved courses offered by other faculties of Saint Paul University, of which a maximum of 21 credits may be in Related Studies. Honours Bachelor in Theology – civil (Anglican Studies Program)The B.Th. (civil) (Anglican Studies Program) is a tailored B.Th. program to meet the specific requirements of the Anglican Studies program at the bachelor level prior to the M.P.Th. degree, which is required by the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa for ordination to the priesthood. Students who meet the general requirements for admission to the B.Th. may follow one of two profiles: (1) Profile A for those students having already completed an undergraduate degree, and (2) Profile B for those students entering the Anglican Studies Program without an undergraduate degree. Profile A – Program Structure (Students who already have a previous bachelor’s degree in any field) a. Ten foundational courses (30 cr.) THO 3160 Pentateuch and Historical Books b. Four courses with Anglican components (12 cr.) THO 3124 Modern Church History c. Two courses selected from among (6 cr.): THO 2177 Selected Topics in Anglican Studies d. Other courses (12 cr.) a. One additional course in Old Testament
Profile B – Program Structure (Students who enter the program without an undergraduate degree): These students will register in the B.Th. program as currently outlined by the Faculty of Theology. The Anglican profile of the B.Th. will include the following 39 credits: a. Four courses with Anglican components (12 cr.) THO 3124 Modern Church History b. Two courses in Anglican Studies selected from among (6 cr.): THO 2177 Selected Topics in Anglican Studies c. Other courses (21 cr.) Four courses from the University of Ottawa, especially introductory courses in sociology and psychology, to be chosen in consultation with the Director of Anglican Studies. Two undergraduate courses in Pastoral Studies offered by the Faculty of Theology. THO 3170 Homiletics Field Placement: Observerships, Internships, and Practica For Anglican students who are postulants for ordination, the observerships, internships, and practica will normally take place in parishes of the Diocese of Ottawa. Two years before entering the M.P.Th. program (i.e. year one of Profile A or year two of Profile B), postulants for ordination will participate in two observerships in two different parish settings. The parish setting will be determined by the field placement supervisor of the Anglican Studies Program in consultation with the student. The purpose of the observership is to broaden the student’s experience of parish life. The observerships will not exceed four hours a week. The observerships, while not credited by the University, remain integral to the Anglican Studies Program. The observership may be combined with THO 3171 Introduction to Pastoral Practice I (Prerequisite: 9 cr. THO). One year before entering the M.P.Th. program (i.e. year two of Profile A or year three of Profile B) postulants for ordination will participate in an internship in a parish. The focus of this internship will be largely the life of a parish on Sundays, giving the student an opportunity to develop liturgical, preaching, and pastoral skills. This internship will not exceed six hours a week. The parish setting will be determined by the field placement supervisor of the Anglican Studies Program in consultation with the student. The internship, while not credited by the University, remains integral to the Anglican Studies Program. The internship may be combined with THO 3109 Introduction to Pastoral Practice II. Liturgy and Community Life Theological and pastoral formation in the Anglican Studies Program occurs within the context of a worshipping community. All Anglicans are invited (and postulants for ordination are expected) to participate in the regular liturgical life of the Anglican Community at Saint Paul University, as well as in extra-curricular activities such as retreats, quiet days, and workshops. Honours Bachelor in Theology – civil (Eastern Christian Studies) (120 credits)The B.Th. (civil) (Eastern Christian Studies) is a 120-credit program consisting of two parts: Part 1: a 30-credit cluster equivalent to one year of university studies, and Part 2: a 90-credit cluster consisting of theological and philosophical studies. Bachelor of Arts with joint Honours in Philosophy and Theology (120 credits)The Bachelor of Arts with Joint Honours in Philosophy and Theology is a 120-credit program offered jointly by the Faculties of Theology and of Philosophy at Saint Paul University. This double specialization program favours a profound study of the two related fields, theology and philosophy, and prepares for the study of theses subjects at the graduate level. The program consists in a basic formation (6 cr.), a specialized formation in philosophy (48 cr.) and theology (48 cr.), and courses of a general nature (18 cr.). Program requirements See the Honours Bachelor of Theology for a description of a typical first year of university studies in the bachelors offered by the Faculty of Theology. a. Program requirements – MAJOR IN ETHICS (42 cr.) / MAJOR IN THEOLOGY (42 cr.) The course requirements of the major in ethics or in theology are identical to those described respectively in the B.A. with Major in Ethics under the heading “Major in ethics (42 cr.)” and the B.A. with Major in Theology under the heading “Major in theology (42 cr.).” Program requirements – MINOR IN ETHICS (30 cr.)
