First Nations Leadership Certificate





Objectives

The First Nations Leadership Certificate program is mainly intended for people interested in increasing their knowledge about First Nations dynamics and issues, and who would like to work with First Nations organizations or communities.

Program Requirements:

  • Introduction to the History of the First Nations of Canada (3 cr.)
    This course is aimed at developing awareness and knowledge of the socio-historical context in which the First Nations of Canada have developed. Specifically, that means developing this awareness and knowledge so as to be able to evaluate this contextual situation and to be aware of the heritage that it has left behind.

  • Introduction to Communication (3 cr.)
    This course is aimed at introducing the learner to the abilities to be developed and the various general strategies to be learnt, as well as certain communication tools intended for the exercise of leadership and efficient communications relative to authority.

  • Introduction to Leadership and the Power to Change I (3 cr.)
    This course is designed to be an introduction to the subject, and to develop awareness and knowledge in terms of leadership, influence, power, authority and change.

  • Leadership and the Power to Change II (3 cr.)
    This course is aimed at developing and increasing the skills necessary for the exercise of effective leadership in the context of Aboriginal takeover of power and self-government.This means developing the ability to evaluatea specific situation and identify the means for integrat-ing, maintaining and fostering First Nations cultural values in terms of leadership and power in a shifting and changing climate.

  • First Nations Today: Socio-economic,Legal and Political Context (3 cr.)
    This course is aimed at developing awareness and knowledge regarding the socio-economic, legal and political context in which First Nations communities and organizations evolve. This involves developing this awareness and knowledge in order to evaluate these contextual situations and to understand their objectives.

  • Self-government ( 3 cr.)
    This course is aimed at developing the necessary level ofunderstanding of the inherent right of First Nations to self-government in the context of First Nations take over of power and independence. This means being able to evaluate the inherent right of First Nations to self-government and to understand the fundamental objectives regarding its limitations and results.

  • Administration and First Nations I ( 3cr.)
    This course is aimed at introducing and developing awareness and knowledge of the administrative context experienced by First Nations communities. It will involve evaluating these contextual situations and understanding their limits and constraints.

  • Administration and First Nations II (3 cr.)
    This course is aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge of the administrative context in which First Nations communities and organizations evolve.

  • Issues and Dynamics of First NationsCommunities throughout the World ( 3cr.)
    This course is aimed at developing awareness and knowledge of the main issues and dynamics that confront Aboriginal peoples throughout the world. It will involve developing this awareness and knowledge in order to be able to evaluate these situations and understand their objectives.
